Usage of the feature originated in Fortran 77 and is well known in IBM Architectures.
Common Block is used for variables that are needed by most modules, making these variables standard for ALL modules.
Examples are time-of-day, call-control, printer-status, and such.
Extended use is that modules MUST feature a standard CRUD like calling sequence. Their values are attached to the variable control-request in common block, which is the second character within common block. This is a near-standard definition from IBM.
And all modules MUST return a completion code in a standard way. This is fixed as the first character of a common block, the variable return-status. This is also a near-standard definition from IBM.
